Love Island: Denmark

If Demark had its own version of Love Island it would, without a doubt, be hosted on a family farm on Æro. Dates would be picturesque beach picnics in a beach hut, boat rides, playing with the flock of swans, and frolicking through the golden wheat fields.

The group caught the 9am ferry from Svendborg harbor to Ærøskøbing. They gave us a 28 mile loop to follow around the island and set us loose.

Groups kind of split up into different paces. Some did it backwards some did it forwards. Four of us, me, Bridgette, Payton, and Anisha broke off and took plenty of breaks soaking up the sun and the beautiful views.

Most of the loop was along the ocean or harbor. Biking the loop was very peaceful. The sea breeze kept us cool on a hot day, we took a mandatory ice cream break and experienced a real long bike ride (something that I had never done before and never thought I would do). I definitely don’t consider myself a cyclist. Regardless, for the ride around Æro, we didn’t need to be. There were some hills but nothing crazy. What a fun ride. Honestly one of the best days of my life.

Along the way:

1. We saw a flock of about 200 swans chillin in the harbor.

2. We stopped and picked cherrys growing on the side of the road.

3. Many houses had little stands outside their property and were selling goods. Some were doing a yard sale type of thing, some were selling hommade jams, granolas, and other fresh fruits. None of the stands were manned though. There was a basket to leave money in and a sign indicating how much money to leave. America could NEVER.

4. Stopped in Marlesten for lunch (ice cream).

5. The cherry on top was stopping at a beach to swim and rest for awhile before we finished out the ride.

6. Much more that I'm forgetting about right now.

In terms of infrastructure, I never felt like I (as a biker) wasn't welcome. There were a lot of bike and ped paths, but we also biked on a lot of roads. Our theory was that we felt safe becasue the roads were so narrow, they almost felt like bike paths and cars had to naturally drive slower.

I'm still always kicking myself for not taking more pictures.

  1. So great to read about your reactions to biking on Aero and about how much fun you had!
